WHY CARE ABOUT INVASION?
Invasion ecology bridges the gap between humans and the natural world. Human-mediated dispersal of organisms occurs at a scale far beyond what most plants are capable of on their own, thus introductions of invasive species are increasingly more common. These introduced or invading species are often detrimental to the habitats they invade, decreasing native species richness and altering ecosystem cycling. It is crucial to understand the factors that promote invasion and spread of invasive species to inform effective management and to protect the integrity of native habitats.
